CCCSD utilizes four processes to provide high quality wastewater collection and treatment. Click on a process icon below for a brief overview.
|
|
Sewage Collection and Maintenance
CCCSD's sewer collection infrastructure consists of 1,500 miles of underground pipeline. The pipes range in size from 6 inches to 102 inches in diameter. Maintaining this system is an ongoing process involving approximately 40 employees. These employees operate from a centrally located facility in Walnut Creek where crews can reach a pipeline emergency anywhere in our service area within 30 minutes. |

Pumping Stations
Much of the wastewater flows through the pipes by force of gravity. But there are some areas where hills prevent natural flow and pumping facilities are required to "lift" the water over these inclines. CCCSD operates 18 pumping stations throughout our service area 24 hours a day. |

Treatment Plant Our state-of-the-art secondary treatment facility can handle up to 55 million gallons per day (mgd) of dry weather flow and 240 mgd of wet weather flow. In an effort to use the most effective methods of treating wastewater, CCCSD uses ultraviolet disinfection, making us one of the the largest wastewater plants in the nation using this process. We also now produce more than 90% of our own electricity through a cogeneration system which saves taxpayers about $1 million per year in electric utility costs. |

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Facility Central San and Mt. View Sanitary District teamed up to build the first permanent Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility for residents of central Contra Costa County. Residents may drop off HHW at no charge Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Small businesses are required to pay a small fee to drop off hazardous waste Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. by appointment only. Residents can also take advantage of the facility's Waste Exchange Program where reuseable household products such as paint, household cleaners, and garden care products are available at no charge. This allows for lower recycling and/or disposal costs. Opened in October 1997, the facility is available to residents of the following central Contra Costa County communities: Alamo, Blackhawk, Clayton, Clyde, Concord, Danville, Lafayette, Martinez, Moraga, Orinda, Pacheco, Pleasant Hill, San Ramon, Walnut Creek, and other central County unincorporated locations within the service area boundary. For more information, or to schedule an appointment for a small business, call the Household Hazardous Waste Hotline at 1-800-646-1431. |
