.About the Sanitary District

Central Contra Costa Sanitary District -- often referred to as "Central San" -- was established in 1946 to provide wastewater collection and treatment services to a population of 14,000 in an area that, at that time, was primarily rural and agricultural. Today, the District serves approximately 448,000 people in the rapidly growing communities of Central Contra Costa County.

Central San operates a state-of-the-art, 54 million-gallons-per-day capacity advanced waste treatment and water reclamation facility. Our sewage collection network includes over 1,500 miles of underground pipes and 19 pump stations.

Central San's services, however, extend beyond simply collecting and treating wastewater. We go to tremendous effort to protect the immediate central county environment as well as the quality of San Francisco Bay and have initiated innovative recycling programs to conserve natural resources. Our guiding principle is to protect the public health and the environment. We not only meet industry standards, we set them. In fact, we've been recognized by federal and state governments for our on-going level of excellence.

The Organization
The District has a full-time staff of approximately 265 and four departments that include Administrative, Engineering, Collection System Operations and Plant Operations.

Central San operates an extremely technical and complex industrial facility. It relies on highly skilled and talented employees to accomplish its important tasks. Recognizing that people are the most essential element of our business, we aggressively seek quality individuals and strive hard to retain them.

The District is committed to continuous improvement work processes in a team-based environment. Employees are expected to interact with their supervisors and co-workers as part of a team and contribute to a culture that values employee input and ideas for the benefit of the District’s ratepayers.
