         Recycled Water for Landscape Irrigation

CCCSD has been involved in water recycling since the early 1970s. We currently provide recycled water to customers located adjacent to our treatment plant and in Pleasant Hill. CCCSD provides landscape irrigation water that meets all the requirements of the State Department of Health Services and the California Regional Water Quality Control Board for unrestricted landscape irrigation. Approved uses include irrigation at schools, parks, playgrounds, median strips and playing fields, as well as dust control and industrial uses.

Recycling water means less water is diverted from the Delta environment. Recycled water is a valuable resource, especially during drought years when water for landscape irrigation is less available because of water rationing.

    The Pleasant Hill Project

    Recycled Water Map

In 1996, CCCSD and the Contra Costa Water District (CCWD) reached an agreement allowing CCCSD to purvey recycled water in specific areas of Concord, Martinez, and Pleasant Hill. In that agreement sixty-one customers were identified as potential recycled water users. Each year, almost 200 million gallons of recycled water are used by irrigation customers, including two golf courses, a community college, an elementary school, three middle schools, a high school, several parks and a number of landscape medians in the City of Pleasant Hill.
A 24-inch pipeline serves as the main recycled water supply line for the project, which is ultimately projected to deliver 1.5 million gallons per day in the Pleasant Hill area. The recycled water will be used only for irrigation purposes.

The Future of CCCSD's Recycled Water

Recycled water is "the right water for the right use".

CCCSD will continue to examine other projects to expand the customer base for landscape irrigation and industrial recycled water use. We have identified potential projects to extend the landscape irrigation system into North Concord, Martinez and Walnut Creek. Additionally, CCCSD is exploring options to provide industrial recycled water to the local petroleum refineries for cooling water purposes. All of these future projects will require a financial commitment, close coordination, and specific agreements with the Contra Costa Water District, Martinez Water District or East Bay Municipal Utilities District. CCCSD will continue to develop projects to provide a safe, high quality recycled water supply to customers at an economically attractive rate.
